Australia
– Indonesia
Youth Exchange Program
|
|
THESIS
|
The Australia
– Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP), which began in 1981, is
beneficial for both young people of Indonesia
and Australia,
and the two countries themselves. This is so for a number of reasons.
|
ARGUMENTS
1
|
First, the participants can get an
opportunity for first-hand experience of living in an being an active part of
another culture. Their experience is from a “rural stay”, in which the groups
live in a village, and an “urban stay”, where they live in a town/city. In
the two places they stay with host families.
|
ARGUMENTS
2
|
Besides, They can develop their
personality in teamwork and negotiating skills, leadership. Confidence,
adaptability, etc. this is so because they are given a chance to undertake a
community-based work and social activities in the urban stay.
|
ARGUMENTS
3
|
Moreover, they can have practical
experience and the development of skill related to their academic studies or
personal career paths. The experience can be obtained through undertaking
work experience related to their chosen fields of study or expertise,
wherever possible.
|
ARGUMENTS
4
|
Not only for the participants, but the
countries also get benefit from the program. It can contribute to a more
stable and enduring relationship between Australia
and Indonesia,
increase people-to-people contacts and institutional links, and can develop a
greater understanding of present Australia-Indonesia relationship and
possibilities for future cooperation and involvement.
|
REITERATION
|
Thus, AIYEP has
proven to be a fruitful program.

THE CONTROVERSY OF HARNESSING SOLAR
ENERGY
|
|
ISSUE
|
We
often hear about solar car, solar heating or solar batteries. But will solar
energy ever be a major source of energy for industrial societies?
|
Argument
“for” ( Point )
|
The solar energy is cheaper than any
other fossil fuel because we can get the abundant source from the sun.
|
Elaboration
|
In sunny desert area, 50 % of the sun’s
radiation that reaches the ground could be used to produce electricity for business
and industries, to provide heat, light, and hot water for homes. Experimental
solar ponds can produce hot water to drive generator.
|
Argument
“against”
(Point)
|
Unfortunately, we can not yet power our
homes entirely on sunlight.
|
Elaboration
|
Solar energy can only be exploited in
bright light. Its greatest potential, therefore, is in hot countries that
have clear skies for most of the year. While most houses are not always in
the sunniest part of the world. In addition, to harness the solar power,
solar cells are needed to convert the sunlight directly into electricity.
Solar cells are very cheap to run, but relatively expensive to buy and many
people can not afford it.
|
CONCLUSION
|
Needless to say that solar energy is a
useful and non polluted source of energy. Nevertheless, solar cells, the main
important device to harness the sun’s energy are still very expensive.

BUYING A MOBILE PHONE
|
|
THESIS
|
When we buy a mobile phone, we have to
think about the advantages as well as the disadvantages. Doing so, we’ll be
able to make a wise decision.
|
ARGUMENT
1
|
If we decide to buy a mobile phone, we
can start asking ourselves the usefulness of the equipment. We may ask, “Do
we want it for our prestige or for its usefulness?”
|
ARGUMENT
2
|
If we decided to buy a mobile phone, we
would make a choice on the type of mobile phone. With the various choices in
the market, we should decide the one that meets our needs. We must know what
we need.
|
ARGUMENT
3
|
As the consequence of its high
operational cost, we have to pay more for a mobile phone compared to a fixed
telephone. That is why we have to think carefully before we decide to use it.
Therefore, we only use the mobile phone for important talks. It will not be
wise if we use it for a chat with a friend.
|
RECOMMENDATION
|
With all the consequences of the mobile
phone, we indeed should give serious considerations before using it. They are
:
1.
Ask yourself, “Do I need it at the moment?”
2.
Buy the mobile phone that suits your budget.
3.
Prioritize the function of the mobile phone for you,
rather than its features that may interest you.
4.
Use the mobile phone for important talks.

HOW DO MARKETS WORK?
|
|
Statement
of
Phenomenon
|
A market is a set of arrangements, which
makes
the buyers and the sellers in contact to exchange goods and services. Prices
of goods and resources, such as labor, machinery, and land, adjust
to ensure that scarce resources are used to produce those goods and services
that society demands.
|
Explanation
Sequence
|
When the buyer and seller meet,
for example, in shops and fruits stalls, they are engaged in a real market.
Real markets physically bring together the buyer and the seller in one place.
Since the development of
technology, it is not necessary for the buyer and the seller to meet each
other. Then, this kind of market is called abstract market, for example, The
Jakarta Stocks Exchange that operates chiefly through intermediaries
(stockbrokers) who transact business on behalf of clients.
|
Background
Information
(optional)
|
In most real markets in the world, sellers choose the price, stock the shelves, and
leave customers to choose whether or not to make a purchase. Antique sales
force buyers to bid against each other with the seller taking a positive
role.
Although superficially different, these markets
perform the same economic function. They determine prices that ensure that
the quantity people wish to buy equals the quantity people to
sell. Thus, prices and quantity can not be separated liberally.
